MCAN’s Background
MCAN was incorporated as an independent, not-for-profit administrative entity. MCAN is designed to be a low-overhead entity organized and operated for the benefit of its members, as well as to advance public service and economic development in the West Tennessee region.
MCAN provides a network connection at each member location, installation and maintenance of that connection on each Member institution’s behalf, and circuit engineering and maintenance support for each network connection.
The University of Memphis, through a provider agreement with MCAN, provides all network interface planning, engineering, and consulting support for the MCAN network.
MCAN is designed to benefit its members, as well as to advance public service and economic development in the West Tennessee region.
Members
Founding members include The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, The University of Memphis, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and The Memphis BioWorks Foundation.
Funding
MCAN was established in 2009 pursuant to a funded project of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (ECD). In contractual cooperation with UT-Battelle/Oak Ridge National Laboratory, ECD provided startup funding designed to benefit Shelby County research institutions from University of Tennessee and Tennessee Board of Regents Systems as well as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Memphis Medical Center/Memphis BioWorks Foundation
